Navigation & pilotageSeyir & kılavuzluk

GPS is primary; the backup skills are what make you a skipper.GPS esastır; seni kaptan yapan ise yedek becerilerdir.

Chart literacy

Lat/long, scale, soundings and chart datum, drying heights, the compass rose, and true vs magnetic (variation = earth’s offset, deviation = the boat’s own distortion).

Buoyage — IALA Region A

Türkiye and Europe. Entering harbour: red to port, green to starboard (the American “red right returning” is the opposite — forget it here). Cardinal marks (N/E/S/W by topmark and light) show where safe water is.

Position fixing

Chartplotter primary; learn the backups — three-bearing fix, transits, depth contours, and dead reckoning (course + speed + time), upgraded to an estimated position with leeway and current set.

Currents on your route

The Med’s tides are tiny, but currents are the story: the Bosphorus and Dardanelles run a strong surface current south, often 2–5+ kn in the narrows, with weaker counter-currents near shore. Plan strait transits around them.

COLREGs & traffic separation

The rules of the road (Denizde Çatışmayı Önleme Kuralları): give-way vs stand-on, lights and shapes at night, sound signals, and traffic separation schemes you’ll transit in the straits.

Passage planning — APEM

Appraisal → Planning → Execution → Monitoring. Use a cruising pilot, set waypoints, mark no-go areas, identify bolt-holes, plan fuel and water stops.
